Cheryl Eve Acosta Biography
Cheryl believes that everything is possible.
Born in the island of Puerto Rico, Cheryl Eve’s jewelry finds inspiration mainly from the ocean and aquatic life. She is known for making bold and distinctive pieces of body adornment where her sculptural jewelry treats the human body as a site of display merging both fashion and art. She highlights both the impermanence and fragility of natural forms with the delicateness of her designs while creating one-of-a-kind pieces.
She trained at the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD) where she received her MFA in Jewelry & Metals. Currently she resides in Kansas City, Missouri, where she actively creates jewelry in her studio and teaches private jewelry workshops.
Cheryl Eve’s work has been published in numerous publications including Art Jewelry Today, 500 Earrings and Stitched Jewels. She also published her own book called Hidden in Nature in 2009. Cheryl’s work has been shown nationally and internationally, including the Georgia Museum, SOFA Chicago, and exhibitions in Seoul, Florence, and Munich, among others.
Artist's Statement
The "Presence" Collection
A small percentage of all life forms are preserved as fossils and even less are discovered. While living in the desert of New Mexico I found several fossilized biological structures which gave life to my collection, Presence. Drawing with square silver wire, my linear forms emerged similar to exoskeleton remains that once represented a snapshot of the process of evolution. This exploration of empty space allows me to play with scale while still making light, wearable timepieces.
